Coaching or mentoring: Which is the right one for you?

Coaching and mentoring are complementary strategies that can be used to develop a holistic approach to your work, working effectively together because they have differing foci.

In coaching, the conversation starts with a discussion about your goals and what a successful outcome will look like for you. You’re encouraged and supported to increase your self-awareness and self-reflection both to achieve your goals and as a sustainable form personal development. Coaching relationships are typically time-limited as you work towards your goals and building your capacity in becoming your own advisor.

In mentoring, the conversation focuses on your longer-term needs or aspirations. The mentor draws on their personal work-related knowledge, experience and insights to provide guidance and support to you across professional areas, setting goals and developing professional competence.

So, which is the right one for you?
