CREDIT is the Contributor Role Taxonomy, a community developed taxonomy that provides a structured and universal way to describe how a project was conducted. The CREDIT taxonomy is a great tool to use when negotiating and managing roles and expectations within a writing team.
The CREDIT taxonomy lists 14 author contributor roles:
- Conceptualization;
- Data curation;
- Formal analysis;
- Funding acquisition;
- Investigation;
- Methodology;
- Project administration;
- Resources;
- Software;
- Supervision;
- Validation;
- Visualization;
- Writing – original draft;
- Writing – review & editing.

You’ll find that the Author Guidelines for a journal will typically include a statement of how they expect you to acknowledge the contributions of each author, and increasingly that expectation will include using the CREDIT taxonomy.
