Sometimes we want to get started on writing a report or article but find ourselves unable to move forward. When this happens, freewriting can be a real game changer.
The invitation is simple, set a timer and, using a writing prompt e.g. What writing have I done/want to do?, write for 5-minutes without stopping. Sounds easy right. Or maybe, it sounds really hard… until you know that there’s no expectation for this writing to end up as part of the report or article you have planned, it’s simply an invitation to connect with your writing mojo.
The aim for your freewriting is full sentences, without editing or pausing, but without the pressure of a reader. Don’t know how to spell a word? Guess! Can’t think of what to write and are tempted to pause? Write that too, and see what comes next.
When the timer sounds, you may find that you’ve written something that you can use in your report or article, but it’s equally likely that you’ve simply moved your writing block to one side, and can now refocus your attention to the writing you want to do. Good luck!
